What are specialized driving privileges?

Specialized driving privileges are privileges granted by a court that allow a person with a suspended license to legally drive for specific reasons.  For example, a person might ask the court for the privilege to drive to work. 

When can a person ask for specialized driving privileges?

An individual whose driving privileges have been suspended by the court may ask the court for specialized driving privileges. IC 9-30-16-3

An individual whose driving privileges have been suspended by the bureau [Bureau of Motor Vehicles] by an administrative action and not by a court order may petition a court for specialized driving privileges.  IC 9-30-16-4

What entity can suspend a person's license?

The BMV may suspend a person’s license without an order from the court.  More information on BMV suspension and reinstatement can be found at BMV Supsension and Reinstatement.

A court may order the BMV to suspend a license.  A person can check public court information here at mycase.IN.gov.

How to Check Driving Record

A person can check their driving record through the BMV at myBMV.com.

A person can search for non-confidential cases in Indiana courts that use the Odyssey case management system at mycase.IN.gov.

What are BMV Reinstatement Fees?

BMV resinstatement fees are fees that are charged by the BMV before a person can have their suspended license reinstated.

A person can ask the court to dismiss BMV reinstatement fees so that they do not have to be paid.

What information do I need before I ask the court for specialized driving privileges?

You will need the following information to complete your Specialized Driving Request.

  1. A certified copy of your OFFICIAL DRIVING RECORD.  It can be purchased here: Official Driving Record. You can learn more about how to read your driving record here: Reading Driving Record
  2. Insurance Verification, which you can get here: Insurance Verification
  3. A copy of your driver’s license and your driver’s license number.
  4. A full list of the locations and addresses you would like to be able to drive to.
  5. A clear reason for needing specialized driving privileges.

How do I ask the court for specialized driving privileges?

  1. Click the “Download Instructions” button and read the instructions.
  2. After you’ve read the instructions, click the “I am ready to fill out the form” button and complete the forms.
  3. Take them to the courthouse or e-file them.  You can e-file these forms, but print them first.  Then, scan them back into your computer.  E-filing fillable forms causes errors in the e-filing system.  You can find out more about e-filing here: E-file Indiana
  4. You may have to file them in more than one county. The instructions tell you where you should file your forms.
